• National Correctional Officers Week
    Updated On: May 08, 2018

May 7th marked the beginning of National Correctional Officers Week. In 1984, then United States President Ronald Reagan, proclaimed the week beginning May 6th to be National Correctional Officers Week. Under Proclamation 5187, the late president recognized the inherent struggles correctional officers face daily and an evolving profession. He stated, “Historically, correctional officers have been viewed as "guards," occupying isolated and misunderstood positions in prisons and jails. In recent years, the duties of these officers have become increasingly complex and demanding. They are called upon to fill, simultaneously, custodial, supervisory and counseling roles. The professionalism, dedication and courage exhibited by these officers throughout the performance of these demanding and often conflicting roles deserve our utmost respect. The important work of correctional Officers often does not receive the recognition from the public it deserves. It is appropriate that we honor the many contributions and accomplishments of these men and women who are a vital component of the field of corrections.” (Proclamation 5187, 2nd paragraph)

Our leaders back then knew the roles of correctional professionals were evolving and conflicting, but had the resolve to recognize all the professionals who work behind the walls and wear the uniform. Over thirty years later, the profession is still evolving from public health crises like increased mental health disease and opioid addiction. The warehousing of incarcerated individuals, combined with the lack of treatment programs fails the overall rehabilitation goal of corrections. Without proper funding and tools, the correctional professional will continue to be challenged in the performance of their duties.

The NCEU, as an organization founded by correctional professionals for correctional professionals, will continue to unite all of corrections under one umbrella and demand the respect deserved. This week is dedicated to all of you.

Thank you all for the work that you do on a daily basis. Be safe and enjoy National Correctional Officers Week!
