LEYDEN - Jacob Harold Garmalo, 21, of North County Rd. Leyden, MA died Thursday (6-9-2016) at Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield, MA as the result of a motorcycle accident.
Jacob was born in Greenfield, on July 4, 1994 the son of Nicholas and Kathleen (Hodder) Garmalo. He was educated in Leyden primary schools and was a graduate of Pioneer Valley Regional School, class of 2012. He was employed as a correction officer at the Franklin County House of Correction, completing the academy in June of 2014. He was an avid outdoorsman, and loved camping. He was involved in Civil War re-enactment activities. He loved woodworking, and blacksmithing, and very proud of the fact that he was born on the 4th of July.
He is survived by his parents, and his paternal grandmother, Mary Garmalo of Greenfield, MA, and his siblings: Christopher Garmalo of Greenfield, MA, and Karrah Garmalo of Holyoke, MA.
There will be a memorial Mass at Holy Trinity Church, Main St. Greenfield, on Wednesday (6-15-2016) at 11 a.m. Monsignor Yargeau, Pastor will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Calling hours will be Tuesday (6-14-2016) from 4 to 6 p.m. at Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 87 Franklin St. Greenfield, MA.
Contributions in Jacob's memory may be made to the SGT Jacob Garmalo Memorial Fund, c/o Greenfield Savings Bank, 400 Main St. Greenfield, Ma. 01302. Contributions to the fund will be used to support men transitioning back into the community through the Franklin County Sheriff's Office reentry program.
