• Sheriff: Trainee subdues inmate after assault on corrections officer

MACHIAS, Maine — A corrections officer in training is being credited for helping to prevent further injury to another corrections officer after an inmate at Washington County Jail allegedly attacked and knocked the other officer unconscious.

Charged in the Feb. 25 attack is an Eastport man already facing assault and manslaughter charges in connection with the death of another Eastport man last September. Hazen McDugald, 39, has been charged with aggravated assault and assault on an officer, both felonies, in connection with the incident last month at the jail, according to a prepared statement released Monday by Washington County Sheriff Barry Curtis.

“McDugald was exercising in the [jail] recreation area under the supervision of a full-time corrections officer and Corrections Officer Trainee Martin Rizzitano,” Curtis said in the statement. “McDugald, with no apparent reason or provocation, assaulted the corrections officer, rendering him unconscious.”

Rizzitano, in his first day on the job, intervened and subdued McDugald, Curtis said.

“Trainee Rizzitano undoubtedly saved the corrections officer from further injury,” the sheriff said.

The corrections officer, whose name is not being released, was taken to Downeast Community Hospital in Machias, where he was treated for his injuries and then released, according to Curtis.

It is the third assault McDugald is accused of committing in the past year.

Last September, McDugald was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and violating bail after police found Maurice “Allen” Harris dead at his home at 3 Clark St. on Sept. 10. McDugald later was indicted on a manslaughter charge in November in connection with Harris’ death.

In a separate incident, McDugald pleaded guilty last November to domestic violence assault charges after attacking his father last July 7, according to court documents. A charge of aggravated assault against Hazen McDugald in that case was dismissed. Details about the July 7 assault have not been publicly disclosed.

McDugald was sentenced to 50 days in jail for the July 7 assault with credit for time served, according to the court records.

Because of the Feb. 25 incident at the jail, McDugald has been taken to the Maine State Prison in Warren, according to Curtis.

McDugald was arraigned in court on the latest charges on Feb. 26. In addition to the $25,000 bail that was set in connection with Harris’ death, McDugald is being held on an additional $35,000 bail as a result of the attack on the corrections officer, the sheriff indicated.
